CBSE to scrap half-yearly, annual exams till Class XI

Posted Thu, 12 Apr 2012 06:32:44 -0000

The semiannual and annual exams will soon come to an end. After the Union HRD meeting the ministry have requested the schools to start using the CCE (continuous and comprehensive evaluation) system instead of the ancient system. This system is to be applied to classes till VIII but now CBSE wants to use this method in the higher classes also. CBSE have introduced this CCE system up to class X. there'll be no board examinations for class X from 2010-2011 session. CBSE has also suggested this system for class XI from the session 2011-2012. The suggestion will be in practice as soon as it gets approved by HRD ministry.

The whole syllabus will be divided into four parts as it is done in the case of semesters. The teachers will assess the students' understanding on the basis of class tests, viva and the project work. The idea behind this is to stop rote learning. In this system the pupils will take four decisive tests based on few chapters and two combined tests covering half of the lessons taught in the class.

"We want to introduce a comprehensive assessment system till the candidates appear for their first and only board examinations after class XII. The stress will be more on internal assessment," said a senior CBSE official.
